In 2023 Tonia Reyes Uranga retired from her role as principal owner of TRUConsult, which served nonprofit organizations and public agencies, with a focus on workforce development and municipal policy issues.

As a Water Advocate, Tonia served on the board of WELL, Water Education for Latino Leaders and presently serves on the Advisory Board for the organization. WELL prepares the next generation of California’s Water policy leaders with the goal  to be inclusive and create elected officials who are ready to take the helm and lead California toward sustainable water policies.

Tonia currently serves on the board of the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) and on the steering committee of Long Beach for Economic Justice. She is the President of Goals for Life, a nonprofit mentoring program that pairs retired NFL players with school-age youth. 

With more than 30 years of experience in workforce and employment issues throughout Southern California, Tonia has worked in administration, contract compliance, program development, and workforce policy.

She partnered with the Los Angeles/Orange County Building Trades to help fund the initial development of the Apprenticeship Readiness Fund. She also worked with Santa Ana College (SAC) to develop and fund the college’s first pre-apprenticeship classes through the SAC Center for Continuing Education, with the goal of improving apprentice success rates.

Tonia served as the first Executive Director of the Miguel Contreras Foundation, an organization established by business and labor leaders.

 She was elected to the Long Beach City Council, where she served from 2002 to 2010. During her public service, she also served on the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Governing Board, the Los Angeles County Sanitation District Governing Board and as a board member of the statewide Coalition for Clean Air.

Her public service and advocacy have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Women in Non-Traditional Employment Roles (WINTER) Public Service Award, Leadership California Community Leader Award, NAACP Humanitarian Award, LAMBDA Human Rights Award, and Champion of Justice Award from the Long Beach Area Peace Network, among others.

Tonia earned her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and completed the Harvard Kennedy School’s Executive Education Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. 

She has been a resident of Long Beach for 45 years. She and her husband, Roberto Uranga, are longtime members of the Long Beach community; Roberto currently serves as vice mayor for the City of Long Beach and served ten years on the California Coastal Commission.
